The most important issue for comment in our Editorial section in the past week was the budget presented by the new BJP government in West Bengal.
The Budget, our Editorial argues, hopes to break from the past in its focus on attracting industrial investments and infrastructure as seen in the proposals for new airports. An ambitious budget in a State where hopes have often been belied, says our Editorial.
The new TVK-led Tamil Nadu government’s White Paper on finances was another topic for analysis. Our Editorial argued that the White Paper presents a candid appraisal of the worrying fiscal health of the State.
The government after making this honest assessment must now go about setting things right, especially in reducing borrowings, bolstering State tax mop-up and pursuing revenue reforms, says the Editorial.
Kunal Shah’s appointment as global head of WhatsApp by parent company Meta and its $900 million investment in CRED was another topic for analysis.
The appointment is an attempt to push WhatsApp Pay and also a pointer towards global majors hiring homegrown talent, bypassing the Silicon Valley route, says the Editorial.
In an article titled, ‘AI is redrawing the entry gate’, Payal Seth takes a deep dive into EPFO data to assess the impact of AI on jobs. She finds that entry levels jobs are either dipping or remain stagnant, while jobs growth is increasingly tilting towards experienced, skilled work.

Commenting on the RBI’s steps on the stock market in an article titled, ‘RBI’s timely move on margin trade’, Sumit Saurav, Soumik Bhusan and Sobhesh K Agarwalla say that these steps are welcome and curb the stress of the stock markets spilling into the banking sector.
